Classes Offered at the

Etta Mae Smith Studio of Dance

A classical form of dance. Ballet is highly technical, graceful and beautiful. It is the dance discipline that acts as a foundation for other forms of dance. The serious and the recreational student gain mind and body discipline, muscle toning, coordination, grace and good posture when studying ballet.

A form of ballet where the dancers, with the aid of special shoes, execute dance steps on their toes. Ballet students must reach a specific level of ballet and be at least 12 years old to be considered for pointe classes.

BALLET

POINTE

An energetic, stylized form of dance. Examples of jazz are seen on TV, in commercials, movies, music videos and on the stage in musicals. Jazz incorporates technique similar to that utilized in ballet class. Also included are isolation exercises, stretching for flexibility and the practice of various turns and leaps. 

A style of dance that incorporates street dance, break dance and jazz, and is usually danced to hip hop music. This is the style most seen in the latest music videos.

TAP

A form of dance where the dancer creates various rhythmic sounds using the taps, (metal plates) on the tap shoes. Tap can be danced to a variety of music styles, or without music. Students gain a sense of rhythm as a fringe benefit of studying tap.

A fluid style of jazz dance that blends with ballet, modern and other forms and is danced to interpret the lyrics and quality of the chosen music. Often with lyrical is a display of control and flexibility.

The use of bending, twisting, balance, stretching and rotating to perform skills beginning with easier tumbling and control movements and progressing to more difficult moves as the student’s strength and ability develop.
